This week Volkswagen has announced they have created a complete electric drive conversion kit which can transform a classic petrol-powered Beetle into a proper electric car.
This is great news for any eco-conscious owners of the German engineering iconic.
Thomas Schmall, Volkswagen’s board member, explained in a press release that an “electrified Beetle combines the charm of our classic car with the mobility of the future” and we agree.
According to VW, the new Beetle conversion kit incorporates tech from the company’s all-electric e-Up car. The kit includes 14 lithium-ion battery modules. Once converted to electric drive a classic Beetle should have a range of 124 miles and a top speed of up to 93 miles per hour.
VW now plans to step its vehicle electrification and is looking into conversion kits for the VW Bus and even the Porsche 356.
VW has partnered with Germany company eClassic, for the conversion kits.
