Space Propulsion Innovation Award winners invent explosive-free space valves

Sam Hyde and Valdis Krumins have won the Space Propulsion Innovation Award for their pyrotechnic-free design of space valves. Rather than using a small explosive to permanently open the valves, their mechanism uses a spring and a piezoelectric trigger. This is an easier solution than the system already in place.
