Are you a teacher or STEM educator? Mark your calendars for June 17th, 2024, and get ready to provide your students with an unforgettable experience that could spark their interest in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) and encourage them to consider a future career in engineering.
The Smallpeice Trust has announced —Solar Tower, a unique virtual event designed to engage and inspire secondary school students, Register Now. The Solar Tower session will be a virtual interactive workshop hosted by a Smallpeice Trust educator. It complements the national curriculum and help schools meet their GATSBY benchmarks.
What is a Solar Tower?
A solar tower, also known as a solar power tower or central tower power plant, is a type of concentrated solar power (CSP) system that uses a large array of flat, movable mirrors called heliostats to focus sunlight onto a receiver at the top of a tall tower.
The concentrated sunlight heats a heat-transfer fluid, such as molten salt, which is then used to generate steam to power a turbine and produce electricity. Solar towers are designed to achieve high temperatures, often exceeding 1,000 degrees Celsius, which enables them to generate electricity more efficiently than other CSP technologies.
The event aims get students thinking about life beyond the classroom. Through a hands-on engineering project, participants will work in small teams to build their solar tower, gaining valuable skills and insight into the engineering world.
This workshop is tailored to appeal to the following age groups:
- Years 8 and 9 across England and Wales
- S2 and S3 across Scotland
- Years 9 and 10 across Northern Ireland
Event Details: The STEM Session – Solar Tower will take place on June 17th, 2024, with sessions running at 09:15, 10:15, 11:15, and 14:15.
Schools are encouraged to join as many sessions as they’d like. One of the best parts? The Smallpeice Trust fully funds this virtual event, so participation is free.
How to Participate: To join the STEM Session—Solar Tower, register your school. Once registered, you’ll receive a kit list and all the details on the event’s requirements. The solar tower project uses everyday items that are readily available.
The event takes place on June 17th, so be sure to sign up soon to secure your spots. Give your students an experience they’ll never forget—one that could shape their future career paths and open their eyes to the exciting possibilities of engineering.
