Residential STEM courses at universities and industrial work experience
It is worth checking out the opportunities offered by EDT, which include HeadStart residential courses at Universities for 16/17 year old pupils and Year in Industry placements.
Imagineering – hands-on activities at school clubs
“Imagineering” introduces 8 to 16 year olds to the fascinating world of engineering and technology through fun, hands-on activities at school engineering clubs and regional engineering fairs.
Masterclasses
The Royal Institution holds masterclasses in Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science Masterclasses. These are hands-on and interactive extracurricular sessions led by top experts from academia and industry for keen and talented young people all around the UK. The Engineering Masterclass series typically contains six Saturday morning sessions, each of which is presented by a practising engineer from industry or academia. Each week students will work on a practical project focusing on a different topic, learning the theory underpinning the subject and experiencing how science and maths connect to real-life engineering challenges.
Young Engineers – competitions and event days
Young Engineers run a wide variety of national competitions, activities and event days for young people aged 7 to 19. These competitions and events provide wonderful opportunities for young people to learn more about engineering and the activities it involves. The young people work together alongside professional engineers.
Young Enterprise
Young Enterprise’s mission statement is “to inspire and equip young people to learn and succeed through enterprise.” Its guiding principle is to do this through “learning by doing”
Thorpe Park Workshops
THORPE PARK Resort is the perfect case study to inspire your students and bring the national curriculum to life. We offer six daily Workshops, lasting 45 minute, on a range of subjects from Maths and ICT through to Science and Marketing, all curriculum linked and delivered by our expert Education Facilitator. Each Workshop has a maximum capacity of 75 and whilst we accept smaller groups, there will be a minimum charge applied.
Our Educational Workshops are curriculum-linked and can be tailored to Key Stage 3, 4, or 5 and can be adapted to suit a range of qualifications including GCSEs, BTECs, A Levels and Diplomas. The Workshops are available every weekday during school term time and during THORPE PARK Resort’s operating hours. Workshops must be booked in advance alongside a schools admission ticket.

Big Bang Fair
The Big Bang is the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths for young people in the UK. Everything is aimed at showing young people (primarily aged 5 -19) just how many exciting and rewarding opportunities there are out there for them with the right experience and qualifications.
Whether you are interested in a career in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or just testing the waters with a love of STEM the event has something for everyone.
Through The Big Bang Fair, which happens at a different location in March every year, and through a series of regional, local and school events, the team works with partner organisations across business and industry, government and academia to try and give a flavour of the real scale and diversity of engineering and science in the UK.

The programme provides free online events where school students meet and interact with engineers. It’s an X Factor-style competition between engineers, where the students are the judges. Students challenge the engineers over fast-paced online live CHATs. TheyASK the engineers anything they want, and VOTE for their favourite engineer to win a prize of £500 to communicate their work with the public.
