The first drone to be powered only by solid hydrogen pellets has taken flight, using a new design by UK company Cella. The hydrogen pellets are three times lighter than an equivalent lithium battery, can operate in extreme cold, and are clean, with the only exhaust produced being water vapour. A 10 minute experimental flight took place at the Scottish Association for Marine Science in Argyll, Scotland, and could pave the way for drones to be used in Arctic research science, as well as lighter and cleaner cars and commercial aircraft.
