Augmented Reality Project Breathes New Life into Britains Historic Cities

A new app – ‘England’s Historic Cities’ – is using augmented reality to offer new insights into the history of historical locations.

Hear stories told by famous historical figures such as William Shakespeare, Countess Ela of Salisbury, Bede the Venerable, and the Seventh Viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion. Uncover tales of political intrigue, archaeological discovery, scientific innovation, and grand adventure no longer lost to time.

The England’s Historic Cities app tells the stories of the country’s best-loved heritage sites. It was launched on 31st March to celebrate English Tourism Week and will transport the user back in time to unveil the hidden lives of some of the history’s most fascinating characters.

The App offers users trigger points scattered throughout each heritage site; you can then use your phone’s camera to uncover augmented-reality displays, 3D reconstructions, and 360-degree panoramas that tell the unique stories associated with them.

The project is funded through the £40 million Discover England Fund.

The app can be downloaded for free on the Apple Store or Google Play Store.
