National Engineering Day 2024 is just around the corner, and the Royal Academy of Engineering is making a final call for nominations of outstanding engineers to be celebrated as role models. With the deadline set for August 16th, 2024, there’s no time to waste in putting forward the names of those who have made significant contributions to the field.
The theme for this year’s event, “Engineering Role Models,” aims to inspire the next generation of engineers by showcasing the remarkable achievements of individuals and teams who have improved or will improve the world through their innovative work. By highlighting the accomplishments of a diverse range of engineers, the Royal Academy of Engineering hopes to attract more young people, particularly those from underrepresented groups, to pursue careers in engineering.
Research conducted by the Academy has shown that engineering-specific role models strongly influence young people’s decision to choose engineering as a career path. However, with only 16% of the current engineering workforce being women and 10% from black, Asian, and minority ethnic backgrounds, there is a clear need for greater diversity and inclusion in the field.
Ideal nominees for engineering role models include innovators like Lucy Hughes, creator of Marinatex, an eco-friendly bioplastic made from fish waste, and Navjot Sawhney, who developed Divya, the world’s first flat-packable manual washing machine for people without access to electricity. Unsung heroes, such as the engineering team at Buro Happold, who made Foster + Partners’ design for the British Museum’s roof possible, are also encouraged.
The nominated engineers should demonstrate some or all of the following traits: an innovative mindset, ethical and environmentally responsible behaviour, adaptability and resilience, a creative outlook, an engaging persona, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
On November 13th, 2024, National Engineering Day, statues of the chosen engineering role models will be unveiled as a tribute to their achievements and contributions. The campaign will also spotlight role models from underrepresented groups, particularly welcoming nominations of engineers who are women, LGBTQ+, disabled, from Black, Asian, minority ethnic groups, and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
Take advantage of this opportunity to recognize and celebrate the incredible work of engineers shaping our world for the better. Submit your nominations for engineering role models by August 16th, 2024, and help inspire the next generation of diverse, innovative engineers.
